Random Hacks, that we've learned during our travels. This list is not inclusive and will be updated as we both remember and learn new things!
Apps:
- Waze: helpful no matter where you're driving. Also you are able to avoid police traps, road hazards and etc because other Wazers are helping you out along the way. Works in most countries and always provides the fastest route first.
- Google Maps: Super helpful in offline mode. You are able to download maps and use them even when you have no service. We used this feature for the first time in Marrakech. Its super easy to get circled around a few times and get lost due to all of the openings and alleyways.
- GlobeConvert:, This is my go to currency converter. Gives you a pretty good idea of what the exchange rate is at any given time. Which helps determine if you want to shop at a particular place as the exchange rate can vary from shop to shop if they accept USD.
- TripAdvisor: This goes without saying. Trip Adviser is one of the largest compilations of Real reviews. Very insightful when booking hotel accommodations, finding a place to dine or just things to do wherever you are. This is Mrs.C's go to place when booking anything, and I literally take the time to read through 100's of reviews. Totally worth it to know exactly what you're getting.
- Google Translate: Very helpful when you need help trying to communicate.
- WhatsApp: Free international talk and text. We use this one quite a bit on international trips. AirBnB hosts, Taxis and others are able to get in touch with you while abroad.
- Mobile Passport: If you do not have Global Entry. Mobile passport is a life changer. You are able to complete the initial customs process on your phone. Thus skipping the longest line in the customs process. While the rest of the plane is in line waiting to make their declarations, take their pictures you are already in line ready to be screened by an agent.
Airlines
- Backpack: Invest in a good backpack. We use these Nike Elite 2.0 Backpacks. They carry enough for around 3 days. Including Curling Irons, Etc. We have used these in place of luggage and carried them on as Personal Items on flights on: Spirit,American Airlines, West Jet, Aero Mexico and Delta

- When possible we prefer to fly with International carriers because the seats tend to be larger and more comfortable; and the food that is served is usually a whole lot better.
- If you see flights on Spirit that you are interested in, you can take around $20 off each way if purchased at the airport. Keep in mind that this is off of the Regular price and not the $9 fair club price, even if you are a member.
- Back to Spirit, if you are not going to upgrade your seats there is no need to pay to choose seats. 100% of the time they have always sat our family together.
Traveling:
PEN: Always carry pens when traveling internationally. There is always a Customs form and if you have a pen you can complete it on the plane or while in the customs line. Otherwise you will have to scramble for a pen and can put you at the end of a very long customs line.
GlobalEntry: Register for Global Entry its $100 for 5 years and includes PreCheck. Note most travel credit cards will credit the $100 fee once every 5 years if you purchase with the card.
Cards currently offering this credit include nut not limited to:
Capital One Venture, Chase Sapphire, United Explorer Card, Bank of America Platinum Rewards, The Platinum Card from American Express, Citi Advantage World Elite.
Also if you do not have Global Entry for your children, but they are on the same booking with you they will automatically receive PreCheck status.
Airport Lounges: Credit Cards are a great way to get access to the posh airport lounges you find in airports. Ever had a long layover, but not quite enough time to get out and explore. Wouldn't it be nice to relax in one of the airport lounges? Most of these lounges provide free drinks, snacks, comfortable seating, Wifi, computer and printer access. We use the Chase Sapphire Reserve to provide us access to many airport lounges. We are currently allowed to access lounges in over 600 airports. Each card member is allowed to bring in 2 guests. So both me and Mr.C can bring in 2 guests for a total of 6. Which accommodates our family of 5.
